WINING & DINING

This month my first recommendation is a reasonably new establishment right in the heart of Palma.

VinoTinto is in Convent dels Capuchins, next to the well-established Rodeo Grill, behind the fish section of the Olivar market.
It has ceiling to floor picture windows giving a good outlook to an attractive refurbed square.

On two floors the style is cool, minimilistic, almost ´IKEA´ like (in the best possible way) with light pine tables and bench seats and stools with blue and white checked napkins. The unusual ‘factory style’ hanging lights over each table and bar area work well with the black slate flooring.

On the ground floor there is an open char-grill where they cook their meat and fish in front of you (supplied to the upper floor by dumb waiter) and small bar where you can take a glass and a montadito.
Below the grill the meats and fish on offer are displayed in a glass cabinet.

On recommendation we went there to order the rib of beef for two as the main course. Having seen it served to another table we skipped any starters: it’s big and with starters would definitely be enough for three.

It was excellent, cooked to perfection salted and seared dark on the outside and pink/red in the middle. They will of course cook it to your liking.
It’s served with what they describe as a baked potato but it was the soft and floury variety- next time I’ll go for a salad with it.

They offer eleven starters ranging from sopa de ajo at 2 Euros to a foie de oca at 10 Euros.

Their choice of six salads range between 3 and 12 Euros (perdiz escabeche).

Every day they offer a ‘fish of the day’ and always offer bacaloa ‘portuguese style’.

Their six grill dish range includes choritzo, pinchos and duck breast.

With bustly atmosphere and friendly, attentive service and with a bottle of their house wine (very good) at 8 Euros the total bill was 36.20.

Closed Sunday.

Feeling peckish near the cathedral / La Lonja area?
Try Cafe Baguette in Calle Felipe Bauza off Plaza Reina, below the cathedral.
Run by Leon and Elin their idea is, ‘to offer the food foreigners miss from the typically Spanish kitchen’.
They offer typical English food and snacks, dishes with a ´Thai´ flavour and of course their baguettes with eleven different fillings to choose from.
Already on the map as far as many yachties are concerned it has become a focal point to eat, chat and to look for jobs and accommodation.
Using their scooter they also offer a delivery service in the Palma area as far as the Club de Mar area.
Open from 08:00 to 21:00 Monday- Friday and 11:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays. Closed on Sundays.
Look out for their special Xmas celebration on the 24th.
