When you lose or get your mobile phone stolen you should immediately inform your operator to prevent illegal use and for your account to be run up.
You should also take a note of the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number which is unique to your mobile.
When you tell the operator to stop your account if you also tell them the IMEI they can completely block that mobile, making it completely useless, even for use with other cards.
In this way the manufacturers and operators are trying to dicourage these thieves.
