Wining & Dining

VERITAS

This month’s restaurant was recommended to me by a yacht owner who was staying at the Gran Melia Victoria hotel in Palma whilst taking delivery of his new yacht.
His opinion, being a very successful restauranteur himself in the UK, was well heeded.
Within the Gran Melia Victoria a new restaurant (which is open to the public) has been opened called ‘Veritas’.
You can choose to dine in the intimate inner section that seats about 30 or on the terrace overlooking the bay of Palma and the Cathedral.
As it was a very hot day we chose the interior, air-conditioned section.
This is plushly and stylishly decorated in dark woods with circular tables with carver chairs. At the end of the restaurant a walled wine rack completes the ÔwarmÕ ambiance.
As one would expect from a restaurant of this quality, the service is very attentive without being overly fussy and the menu is reassuringly compact (I donÕt believe a chef can be good at a large number of dishes at a time).
The starters range from 9.50 for cream of leek soup to 28 for prawn carpaccio.
They offer a number of fish dishes: 19 for bream and 22 for a sea bass dish.
Their meat dishes range from 16 to 23, the latter for a choice of a fillet of milk-fed lamb or Bresse Pigeon.
Their range of deserts are all priced at 7.50.
As we read the menu we were brought some amuse bouche with a choice of hot bread rolls.
We chose starters of tartare of salmon with avocado cream and fried vegetables (a version of frito) with brie.
For the main courses we opted for fillet of milk-fed lamb with a chicory tartlet and cheek of beef in a rich red wine sauce. Everything was excellent.
With a couple of aperitifs, half bottles of white and red, a bottle of water and a coffee the bill came to 103 Euros.
