Wining & Dining

Son Joan

The well known French restaurant, Son Joan, next to the church in Calvia is now under the new direction of Wellies.
In conjunction with former super yacht chef, Herve Gral, who is acting as a consultant to the new set-up for Geoffrey Kenion who said, ´we obviously intend to continue the French style whilst aiming to bring a more bustly, bistro atmosphere. Bringing the expertise, experience and back-up of the Wellies operation we are working on changing the menu slightly and strengthening the service side of the operation. We shall be shortly announcing our new menu that Herve has been working on offering a choice of three differently priced ‘menus’ at lunchtime and offering an a la carte selection with ‘Chalkboard specials’ in the evenings. We are also in talks with Calvia council and hope to get permission to build a transparent ,sliding roof over the attractive garden area of the restaurant which, up till now, has been underutilised. Another option that we are looking at is offering a full blown carvery on Sundays. We also intend to strengthen the wine list where we shall be offering the very best from the local vineyards. Armelle and Eric remain your hosts- now with a little help from their friends’.

Latest From the Penny Roberts School of Cookery

It is not generally known that the Penny Roberts School of Cookery has been diversifying its activities for some time now beyond the niche market of galley cooks and stewards/esses. Using her new cookery book as a basis Penny has been organising Cooking Holidays entitled ‘Cook And Eat Espana’ for overseas visitors. Quality accommodation of their choice is found for them and they are provided with a balanced mix of hands-on cooking, market shopping, wine tasting, sightseeing and evenings of good food and wine. As one satisfied client reported, ´...this week has been a gastronomic delight.’

But one does not have to be a ‘tourist’ to participate in these breaks; locals are more than welcome to join in. These four day breaks are projected for all weekends throughout the summer. Similarly, following the success of her Villa Service programme last summer, Penny will be offering the same service to all who wish to entertain in their own villas, onboard yachts or in other venues. Villa Service removes the considerable pressures of planning, shopping, preparation, cooking and serving so that hosts and hostesses may better enjoy the company of their guests, friends or business associates. All Penny’s cooks, stewards, stewardesses and bartenders are young people from a variety of international backgrounds. Some are former students of Penny’s School, others may be qualified elsewhere and are temporarily ashore. But all are organised and supervised by Penny, their quality of service being monitored at all times. For more information email Penny Roberts at yachtcookery@yahoo.co.uk
