BOATYARD PALMA CONCESSION
UPDATE
Bobby Copper is Manager of Varedero Palma, who are part of the IP3M Group and associates of STP (Servicios Tecnicos Portuarios, S.L.) who have been chosen as the new concessionaires for Boatyard Palma.
Below Bobby answers some of the questions that have arisen since the announcement that the yard concession is changing hands.
Q: The new concession starts on 2nd December, have you any further comments to add about this timing?
A: The hand over of the concession on Friday 1st of December is fortunate for all. The following week has two holidays on the 6 and 8 December. This will allow the existing concessionaires the possibility of vacating the offices for STP to occupy during a week that has traditionally been very slow. This will help to reduce any operational impact that would be inevitable, if it was to happen during a high volume work week.
Q: Who can owners reps. contact with further questions and to check capacity / facilities for future use of the yard ?
A: The phone numbers and fax numbers will be in operation in the first week of December. Hard standing capacity, and travelift availability, will be the first thing to be studied after 1st of December. We will endeavour to honour all reservations made prior to December 1st with BYP.
Assuming the yard is full, it is fairly obvious that haul-outs can only occur after a launch has been completed.
Priority will be given by date of petition. Until this study has been completed no new confirmed bookings will be offered.
All requests can be made by E-mail now to:
info@stp-palma.com
Or at the reception after 4th of December.
Q: We understand that STP will be the managing operators of the new concession, does this mean that a totally new management team will be in place from December , to look after the future sales, marketing and co-ordination activities?
A: Yes correct, but it will take time to develop this team and have it fully operational.
Q: It has been stated that the new concessionaires are expressly excluded from entering into contracts for maintenance, repair , painting etc. and can only undertake the berthing, lifting and supply of shore utilities etc. Is that a correct statement?
A: Yes correct, and there will be no surcharges or embargoes applied. All
companies and contractors complying with existing requirements for liability insurance, social security, and H & S / environmental regulations set by the Port Authorities, will have access to work in the yard.
Q: Environmental and security proposals, plus investments in infrastructure were mentioned as key factors in STP´s favour during the bid process. Can you elaborate on these and comment on how capacity may be effected ?
A: All aspects of the project were thought out with the priority of providing as safe and healthy a work place as possible, with minimum environmental impact. This includes, but is not limited to, perimeter drainage with sludge tanks for separating toxic residues, grey and black water collection from all berths. A clear distribution of car parking and boat storage, 24 hr full CCTV surveillance and human security personnel.
A new compressed air main, etc, etc…
Work will commence as soon as planning is approved. Construction is planned in phases, so that at no time will capacity be reduced.
