Earlier this year a British registered charitable trust was set up called, The Professional Yachtsman’s Trust.
The catalyst for setting it up was the tragic accident of MY Griff’s (ex Louisianna) chief Officer, Rick Byrne who suffered a major brain injury due to an accident in the US. Although insured, the cover was not enough for the intensive care and air ambulance to the UK.
Subsequently Rick’s former captain, Mike Mullen, with Rick’s brother-in-law, Ian Burgess and old friend, David Lane, set up the Bristol based trust.
The aim of the trust, to be governed by a committee, is to provide financial support for professional yachtsmen of all nationalities, races, creed and type of yacht service when disaster strikes.
At the present time criteria for support are being drawn up by the trustees and others in the yachting industry, the eligibility left to the discretion of the trustees/ committee.
Most recently at the Pinmar Yachtsman’s Golf Tournament gala dinner over 12,000 Euros were promised by various companies and individuals for the trust’s fund.
